Hill was on the outside of this high speed left-hand turn in a portion of the track that had some oil put there from a previous race and the result was that he slid off the track for an off-track excursion and in the course of this activity had also performed a complete 360 degree spin and all the while trying to maintain some control so that he would be able to re-enter the track in a safe manner to continue racing. As he maneuvered his racecar to re-enter the track, he now found himself in fifth position with a considerable amount of distance behind the new leader.
